Multiplication is repeated addition. The numbers being multiplied are called factors and the result of multiplication is called the product.

Tip

The following symbols mean to multiply.

  • · Raised dot 4 · 5
  • () Indicates two numbers next to one another are multiplied. (4)(5) or 4(5)
  • × Cross sign which also indicates multiplication. 4 × 5

Multiplication is a process that shortens repeated addition with the same number. For example, 4 × 2 = 8. If we were using repeated addition, this problem would be written as 4 + 4 = 8. Another example is 6 × 5 = 30. This could be written as 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 30.

As you can see, as the numbers become larger, repeated addition would not be reasonable. If you were to multiply 43 and 112 you would not use the repeated addition method.

Being able to multiply with speed and accuracy through memorization of the basic multiplication facts will make the multiplication process easier. Below is a multiplication chart of basic multiplication facts.

Like addition, multiplication has properties or special rules that can help make problems easier. Select the Next button and learn about the multiplication properties.
